Hurricane Stan Crushes Mexico
Wednesday, October 05, 2005
Hurricane Stan hit Veracruz Mexico today with sustained winds up to 80 miles an hour. Over 66 people died when Hurricane Stan hit Mexico. Several neighborhoods that were not very high had flooded, and many trees were knocked over. A lot of the injuries from Hurricane Stan in Alvarado and Montepio were from collapsing roofs and falling trees.
Over 49 people died in the flooding in El Salvador, with over sixteen thousand people evacuated. There were many landslides, including one in Costa Rica which killed a 36 year old woman.
While there were landsides, there was also concern about the crude oil ports. The crude oil ports were all closed down before Hurricane Stan hit as a precaution to avoid any major damage. These ports were all owned by, Petroleos Mexicanos, a state-owned oil company. These ports usually export 1.8 million barrels of oil a day.
