Alberto: First 2006 Hurricane
Monday, June 12, 2006
Today forecasters issued the first hurricane warning of the 2006 hurricane season. Tropical storm Alberto is the first named storm of the 2006 season. It quickly gained strength and is heading towards Florida.
The national weather service said there has been no reported injuries. There is an estimated storm surge of 10ft, and there have been two tornados spotted.
The warning for this hurricane extends 200 miles from Longboat Key to the Ochlockonee River which is south of Tallahassee. Tropical Storm Alberto is expected to produce hurricane conditions within the next 24 hours.
In the Marina at St. Petersburg, workers are expecting to work through the night securing boats from the approaching storm. There are more than 600 boats in the marina. Securing all the boats will be quite a task for the marina workers. As with the marina workers, loads of other individuals are preparing for the impact of the storm.
Alberto formed nine days after the start of hurricane season, on Saturday. Since this marks the beginning of an active hurricane season, you can expect a lot more updates from this blog over the next several months.
