Hurricane Rita Hits Land
Saturday, September 24, 2005
As Hurricane Rita made landfall, and President Bush was at the U.S. Northern Command in Colorado. When referring to Lake Charles he said "It got hit hard." Lake Charles has very extensive damage from Hurricane Rita. An interstate highway bridge over the Calcasieu River was hit by a barge that broke loose during the intense winds of the hurricane.
While Lake Charles was hit pretty hard, the oil refineries in Texas remain unharmed. The combined effects of the hurricane losing force and preparations done to the refinery helped control the damage. This is a good thing that should equate to gas prices either dropping or not raising.
Some of the troops that were deployed to help in Alabama and Mississippi have been deployed to help with Hurricane Katrina have been re-positioned to help out with Hurricane Rita. They will be moving to Texas and western Louisiana. These troops will also be helping in New Orleans to fix the levee and control flooding.
