Hurricane Katrina affects Colleges
Monday, September 26, 2005
Colleges around the nation have been pretty accepting of students that have been displaced from college because of Hurricane Katrina. Several colleges including Harvard and Dartmouth have put a temporary lax on their admission process and are now accepting some last minute moves from students the New Orleans area.
Not only are colleges doing everything to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, the NCAA is also going to relax several of its rules governing athletic eligibility for student athletics. This will allow students from the affected region to accept outside money to help pay for costs of attending another university while still playing sports for their original school. This is very good news for people that are on teams in the New Orleans area.
Colleges are not only helping athletics, but they are helping all students. The state of Ohio has announced that it will waive all tuition fees for students who have already paid full time tuition at their home colleges that were affected by Hurricane Katrina.
Professors from several universities such as Tulane and Loyola University have been displaced and are now carrying on their research and teaching positions at other colleges while their home university is being repaired. Hurricane Katrina also affected Louisiana State University. They had to close down classes for several days, but are now in normal operations.
